Festival season in Korea opens this week. Waterbomb Seoul runs July 24 to 26 at the KINTEX Outdoor Global Stage, and the makeup already showing up on idols' Instagram feeds has set the tone for the rest of the summer.
The appeal of a festival look is that you get to wear things you would never wear on a normal day. Vivid shadow. Heavy smoky eyes. Color dropped on the inner corner or under the lash line. Six recent looks are worth stealing.
Sunmi went ethereal. She swept a shimmering green shadow up over the lid and carried it onto the bridge of her nose, which softens the whole face instead of framing only the eye. In a second look she spread a pastel shade across the entire lid for something closer to cotton candy.

aespa's Giselle took the opposite route. Her smoky eye is deep and almost entirely black, and it reads sharper than any color would. Festival makeup does not have to mean bright pigment. For the polished version, black still wins.

KATSEYE's Yoonchae skipped color altogether. She built a wide, wet-looking highlight across the eye, the brow bone and the cheekbone. Under festival lighting that catches far more than pigment does.

LE SSERAFIM's Huh Yunjin refused to pick between two shades. Blue went on the lid as the focal point and coral went underneath, so the look holds a cool tone and a romantic one at once.

Hearts2Hearts' A-na kept hers small. Blue shadow sits only on the inner corner and the tail of the eye, which is the easiest entry point if a full festival face feels like too much.

Her groupmate Carmen went furthest. She placed art makeup with a stencil and matched it to her blush, and the result is deliberately kitsch rather than pretty.
