Three rookie debuts, three different roads: how K-pop's 2026 class broke the formula

K-pop's 2026 rookie class did not run on one formula. One group came out of a Mnet audition show with a global vote behind it. One came out of a hip-hop label run by an artist. One came out of a band competition and debuted with instruments where the choreography usually goes. Three debuts, three different roads into the same market.

Alpha Drive One took the road everyone recognizes

Alpha Drive One is the familiar version of the story. The group was assembled on Mnet's Boys II Planet last year, with the final eight-member lineup settled by global voting, and debuted on January 12 with the mini album Euphoria. The pre-debut stage for "Formula" was out before the record was, and by release week the group had already stood on the MAMA Awards and Melon Music Awards stages.

That is the classic project-group shape. Member stories get built across a season of television, then large-scale performance carries them into the debut. It works because the audience has already spent months picking the lineup, so the fandom exists before the first single does.

Lngshot started somewhere else entirely

Lngshot is the first boy group from More Vision, the label Jay Park runs, and it began from a different premise. The four members, Ohyul, Ryul, Woojin and Louis, put out the debut EP Shot Callers in January, built on hip-hop and R&B rather than on formation work. The pre-release "Saucin'" set the register and the title track "Moonwalkin'" carried it, with arrangements that leave each member room for his own vocal and rap.

The group leads with music and individual character instead of a mass unison routine. How much of the label head's own sound ends up inside Lngshot is one of the more interesting things to track here, because it is the part no survival show can manufacture.

hrtz.wav debuted playing live

The third act arrived with ensemble playing as its opening argument. hrtz.wav came out of Mnet's band-making program Steal Heart Club, assembled from the five who finished first in their positions: YYJ on keys, Riaan on vocals, Dane on bass, Keiten on guitar and Hagiwa on drums. The debut mini album The First Wave landed in April, and the title track "Nineteen" put the band sound out front.

The starting mechanism is the same one Alpha Drive One used. What differs is the center of the stage. For hrtz.wav that center is the arrangement rather than the formation, which changes how a set gets built, rehearsed and toured.

The read: the pipeline stayed, the output widened

Start with where the record actually splits. Two of these three teams came out of the same building. Boys II Planet and Steal Heart Club are both Mnet competition formats, and both delivered their winners into a debut with a ready-made audience. What changed in 2026 is not the casting pipeline. It is what the pipeline is allowed to produce at the other end.

That distinction matters commercially, not sentimentally. Format decides cost structure. A performance group monetizes through album bundles, fan-call cycles and choreography-driven arena runs. A band monetizes through repeat live attendance, festival slots and a production spend that goes into backline rather than into dancers. A hip-hop-led team monetizes through features, solo activity and a catalog that ages on a different curve. Three formats means three different revenue shapes coming out of the same casting machine, and that is a much cheaper way to widen a market than building three new pipelines.

Where this cuts against current practice is in the standardization itself. The industry moved toward one output format because a standardized product is easier to schedule, easier to sell to promoters and easier to replace a member inside. Running a band and a rap-led quartet through the same year means giving up some of that interchangeability on purpose. Wakeone, More Vision and Kakao Entertainment are three separate companies making that call independently, which is what makes it look like a market shift rather than one label's experiment.

The risk sits in the support system rather than in the music. Broadcast music shows, fan-event formats and album-bundle economics are all tuned to the performance group. A band needs load-in time and a different stage plot to look like itself on television, and a rap-led team needs a promotional calendar that rewards catalog rather than comeback weeks. If the infrastructure does not adjust, the format diversity ends up living mostly on streaming and mostly outside the machinery that turns a rookie into a headliner.

Open question

When each of these acts releases its second record, do Lngshot and hrtz.wav hold their debut first-week figures as well as Alpha Drive One holds its? If they do, the format diversification is structural and the audience genuinely widened. If only Alpha Drive One holds, then what carried all three debuts was survival-show fandom and the format was surface.
